This monitor lizard was approx 5-6 feet long. It was on the main tourist path into the jungle and was a real surprise. When it finally moved it didn't seem to move very fast but I have a feeling if it was hunting, it would be a lot faster. Check out the claws on this puppy.

These monitor lizards are everywhere in Thailand. You don't have to go anywhere near a jungle to see them. In Bangkok's Lumphini park, many can be seen swimming in the lake there, and walking along the lake's edge. They're unafraid of people. Along the many canals (khlongs), larger monitors such as the one you photographed can easily be spotted. The Thai name for them is hia.
